We all know Pinterest now, as it has become a mainstream social sharing site for bookmarking and grouping images together. I’ve seen blog posts. I’ve seen bi-lined articles. I’ve seen infographics. All of these things on the uses of Pinterest, how to be successfull, b2b uses, and so on and so forth. What I haven’t seen, is anyone coming up with a truly brilliant business use for Pinterest (though I knew they existed)… until now…
I’ve been down to Fort Myers area in Florida a handful of times now, and every time I go I love it more. I love the gulf side of Florida, love, love, love it! Last trip down there in December, my husband also took me to Sanibel, which is equally lovely. I would say – to date – it is probably one of my favorite areas in our nation to visit (and I’ve been to just about all of the contiguous states).
I happened to stumble upon this Pinterest contest (having seen the image pinned) and decided to click-on through to see what it was all about. I don’t often enter contests, I don’t gamble. I just typically avoid these things, but this one I decided to have a go at.
Here’s the scoop.
The Lee County Visitors & Convention Bureau put this contest on Pinterest and it goes a little something like this:
- Follow them on Pinterest
- Create your own board on Pinterest dedicated to the Fort Myers/Sanibel area
- Pin at least 12 related images to your board
- Head to their Facebook page and send them the link to your board on Pinterest…
- That’s it!
They are giving away 2 night’s accommodations and some other freebies to go with, which I would love to get my hands on (win).
Here’s what happened to me during the process. I embarked on a journey to get my minimum 12 photos to pin on my dedicated board. I actually went and dug out some old vacation photos and pinned those, wanting some of my own original content. Then I thought about what I liked about Fort Myers Beach, what restaurants, shops, etc., and began searching out those images to share. I hit my 12 images and realized I had more I wanted to pin – so I’m still pinning, and will probably continue to pin as I begin justifying in my head all the reasons I need (want) to go back.
So while the Lee County VCB is leveraging the public to promote Fort Myers/Sanibel in a dreamy and positive way, they are putting themselves on the map as a vacation destination in people’s minds. It is truly brilliant, and I can tell you, I already want to go back just from scanning through hundreds of images.
In my mind, this is the best use yet I have seen of Pinterest from a crowd-sourcing perspective… I’m left with this thought:
The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel are SW Florida’s unspoiled island sanctuary – atmosphere that’s a little quieter, a lot less hurried & less like the rest of the world… and I want to go there now!
I want to talk my husband into planning our next trip down there! Way to go Lee County VCB – regardless of whether I win or not, I know I will be planning a vacation to your neck of the woods – probably what you were hoping for eh?
Well played my friends… well played!
