Just a quick post – something I thought was totally cool. Many folks still don’t get why they should use Twitter. Businesses don’t understand the benefits to their local customers.
Upstate NY, until very recently, has had less than normal snowfall, where the rest of the nation has been pounded. Areas that generally get little or no snow have been debilitated because of the snow, and have had to act accordingly.
A friend living in Washington DC left a note on my Facebook page in reference to a previous post titled “What makes MY Tweets Interesting“. These were the words she shared with me today in response:
.. during the DC blizzard in Feb, I monitored the Twitter feed of the local hardware store to find out when the new stock of shovels arrived (mine broke shoveling wet snow). I got my new shovel 15 minutes after they had arrived. Customers pay attention.
That is a perfect example of how businesses can work their Twitter feed to attract more customers, and built loyalty with existing customers.

You amaze me more everyday. Great example.
Hi Wendy,
I like your blog a lot. I’m new to all of this. I’m a public health professional and I help people to quit smoking through evidence-based practice. I’m thinking of starting a new website, quitmentor.com. I’m wondering if social media venues such as Twitter and Facebook are the way to go to generate interest in a site such as mine that is really geared to getting clients who need help quitting. I see you have a lot of experience with helping small businesses. Can you offer any advice or can I email you directly? This is not a sales pitch to get you as a client. I’m really new to all this and am looking for advice from savvy social media professionals.
Thanks,
Jacque
Hey Jackie! I’m a bit slow to respond, and as I’m reading this realizing we are now connected on FB too!
I definitely think you could make a go of your mentoring for quitting smoking using social media. I actually wrote a blog post back in January about that very thing (as I have quit smoking just this past January). Check this out:
Using Social Media to Quit Smoking
